How accurate are the ounce and mL measurements on the Twist Pouches, and
how do I read them?

The volume measurements on the Twist Pouches are very accurate (within approximately 5%) when they are read correctly. These graduations are meant to be read when the pouches are fully expanded. To expand the pouches, pull the front and back panels apart near the base of the pouch. This will open the bottom panel. Pushing up on the bottom panel with your finger can help fully expand the pouch. It is easiest to expand the pouch once there is milk inside.

What is the fastest, easiest way to squeeze the air out of the pouches for feeding?

First of all, make sure you squeeze as much air as possible out of the pouch before popping on the Active Latch nipple. With one hand, squeeze the pouch (through the openings in the bottle) until the milk level comes up just below the top of the pouch. Once the nipple is popped in place, you will only have a small amount of air left to squeeze out. You can squeeze the pouch very firmly (try reaching through the bottom of the bottle for best results), OR you can pinch the tip of the nipple as you squeeze. Pinching the nipple tip will cause the Active Latch slit to open, and will allow the air to escape much more quickly as you squeeze. Make sure the bottle is level and upright as you squeeze the air out!

Why don't Active Latch nipples and Twist Pouches have venting valves?

Vents are typically used in feeding bottles to allow air to enter the bottle as the baby drinks, to prevent a vaccuum from forming inside the bottle (which would make it increasingly difficult to get milk out of the bottle). Since Twist Pouches are flexible (unlike regular bottles), they collapse as your baby drinks. This means that they shrink as the volume of milk decreases, and no vaccuum is formed as the milk level goes down. The amount of suction required is the same at all times (regardless of milk level), and no air ever needs to enter the pouch to help push the milk out. This completely eliminates gas from the pouch, and it eliminates the need for complicated and dishwasher-hungry venting parts!

How do I pump into twist pouches if I’m using a manual pump?

If you are using a pump that is NOT hands-free (this could be a manual pump, a single electric, or a double electric), you can use the Squeeze natural feeding bottle to hold the pouch during pumping. This will allow you to put the pouch and pump down upright on a flat surface. Just follow the instructions (see the instruction manual here) for snapping the pouch into the bottle, then thread the adapter on, then thread your pump onto the adapter.

How tight should I tighten the cap on Twist Pouches?

There is no need to over-tighten the caps! Tighten the caps on Twist Pouches the same way you would tighten the cap on a disposable water bottle. Tighten them firmly, but, like on any plastic cap, applying excessive torque can cause the plastic to distort, which can cause leaking.

How much air should I leave in the Twist Pouches when freezing them?

Technically, breastmilk will expand approximately 10% when it freezes. Practically speaking, you will be safe if you leave about 1/2oz of air in the pouch. This does NOT need to be a precise measurement!

Why should I freeze Twist Pouches flat?

The less time your breastmilk spends at room temperature, the better! When pouches are frozen flat, they have an increased surface area (for a given volume of milk), which means faster heat transfer to the milk. This translates to faster freezing, and faster thawing. This faster thawing and warming is of course something you will also appreciate at feeding time!

What materials are Twist Pouches and accessories made of?

Twist Pouches, Direct-Pump adapters, Keeper, Squeeze natural feeding bottle, and Active Latch nipples are made of polyethylene (LDPE and HDPE), polypropylene, and silicone. All Twist products are BPA-free, PVC-free, and pthalate-free.

Why shouldn't I steam or microwave my breastmilk?

Studies show that exposure of breastmilk to temperatures higher than 60C can destroy the important antibodies and can denature the proteins contained in breastmilk. The temperature of steam is 100C or hotter. Microwaves can cause local hot spots within the breastmilk, meaning that, even if the overall temperature (the "bulk temperature") of the milk feels safe, small pockets within the volume may have been temporarily heated well above 60C.

How hard do I need to push the Active Latch nipples into the Twist Pouches?

It only takes a couple of pounds of force to pop the Active Latch nipples into the pouches. Make sure the bottle (with pouch) is on a flat, sturdy surface when pushing the nipple into place. Be sure to push using the nipple case top if you want to avoid touching the nipple tip directly. There are 2 ways that you will know the nipple is in far enough: 1) There will be an audible "pop" sound as the nipple pops into place. You will hear it and you will feel it. And 2) When you look around the base of the nipple (after it is popped into place), you should see the outer edges of the nipple just barely touching the top of the bottle all the way around the top outer edge of the bottle.

How do Active Latch nipples work?

Active Latch nipples are a bit different from regular feeding nipples! They are designed to teach breastfeeding habits, and as such they ease the transition between bottle and breast. There are 2 important actions associated with a good, deep latch: suction and massaging. Thanks to a special type of opening, Active Latch nipples will not allow milk to flow without suction and massaging of the nipple. This will teach your baby to use BOTH of these actions, which will help to stimulate natural let down response when breastfeeding. We are trying to discourage "lazy latching", a common problem with bottle feeding where the baby simply latches on to the tip of the nipple and gets plenty of milk flow. This is NOT a breastfeeding-friendly technique!

What's the easiest and cleanest way to remove the Active Latch nipples from Twist Pouches?

You can gently remove the nipple from the pouch simply by grabbing the nipple near the base and slowly prying it away from the bottle. This will prevent the nipple from suddenly releasing from the pouch. The lower part of the nipple may almost turn inside out while you pry - don't worry, you can just pop it back later!

How can I use a nipple from another brand to feed gas-free from Twist Pouches?

Of course we highly recommend that you give Active Latch nipples a try before switching to a different brand - they are loved by a wide range of babies, especially fussy feeders who will not latch onto nipples from many other brands! Certainly, if you wish to use another nipple to feed with Twist Pouches, it is very easy and straightforward to do so. Just snap the pouch into the bottle according to the instructions, remove the cap, and thread on the appropriate direct-pump adapter for your nipple. Thread the nipple onto the adapter, then squeeze the pouch to push the air out through the nipple. Make sure the bottle is upright and level while you squeeze the air out!
